What are the main differences Between jackets and coats?

The terms jackets and coats are often used interchangeably especially when new fashion trends have been introduced that overlap or confuse the terms. However, there is a key difference between coats and jackets. Jackets are a hip/waist length outfit that is worn over any other piece of clothing. Whereas the coat is a longer piece of garment that is usually knee/thigh length and worn in extremely cold weather.
A black denim jacket has sleeves that fasten in the front by means of zippers or buttons. It is meant to cover the upper body. Jackets are tight in fitting, less insulating, and usually lighter in weight. There are huge styles and designs of men’s puffer jackets that you can wear as a fashion statement. Jackets are supposed to be a thin coat that is suitable in slightly cold weather conditions.
On the other hand, a coat is a piece of clothing that is used for warmth. Coats are typically long in length, often ending at thighs, or knees, and even ankle length. Coats are made of thicker, insulated, and warmer material to provide utmost warmth to the wearer. Today, coats are used as fashion more than as protective clothing.
